A Brief History
The Hall and the Village
Thelnetham Village Hall started life as the village school, built in 1871 and opened as the school in 1872, by the Rev. E. H. Sawbridge and his son, Canon J. S. Sawbridge.
On the school closure in 1954 the old school became available for a much needed village hall, the dream of John Middleton Murry, farmer and author. His work in the village is documented in his book ‘Community Farm’.
To live in or visit Thelnetham is to be part of a truly rural heritage which spans millennia. The people of Thelnetham today are still making history, linking their past to a present and a future in which community cohesion and a sense of continuity are key.
Recent Renovation
Over time the building that is now Thelnetham Village Hall has needed considerable work to enable it to function.
As a listed building, this work has to be carried out with all due attention to its historic heritage – which of course comes at a cost.
In 2019 the most recent renovation work began.
This included:
• Full renovation of the roof
• Removing plant growth on the outside walls
• Repairing stonework
• Refurbishing all the leaded windows
• Repairing other broken windows
• Plastering and painting the vaulted ceiling
• Converting the ladies toilet into a disabled toilet
• Removing the old kitchen
• Repairing and resurfacing the kitchen floor
• Installing all new kitchen units and installing a dishwasher and cooker
• Sanding and treating the floor boards in the hall
• Clearing outside areas including the car park, pathway round to the door and side entrance area
The majority of this work was carried out with the help of the National Lottery Heritage Fund, as well as significant contributions from Thelnetham Fen Trust, West Suffolk Council, Thelnetham Parish Council and a generous range of contributions from residents over a period of many years.
We still have a lot to do, but for that we need your help. If you would like to join the Thelnetham heritage volunteers please get in touch. Financial donations, no matter how small, are always gratefully received!
We want Thelnetham Village Hall to be a vibrant hub of the community with all the facilities of the modern age whilst retaining its unique character.
